Wondering if it’s time to deploy digital signage in your venue? More and more hotels, restaurants, and ultra-lounges are using digital signage to engage their visitors. But, as with any technology, content is king. It doesn’t matter how good the sound system is if the DJ doesn’t have a feel for the crowd. And your favorite team losing on a 70-inch plasma is still… your favorite team losing.

But, unlike whether the Jets or Giants are kicking butt or stinking up the field, you actually have control over the digital signage content in your venue. Here are three tips to make it more effective:

1. Know your audience. This is the number one rule of content creation in any medium. If you’re a successful business owner, you already know what your audience likes. But this has to do with more than just the content. It also relates to the frequency of each message, how long it should play (if you own a bar, the message should be fast and furious and repeated frequently), and the overall tone of every message you share. Which brings us to number 2 on our list:

2. Know your objective. Once you know who you’re talking to, it’s crucial to also know what you want to tell them. Is selling your key objective? (If so, that’s okay.) Or is the goal education and brand awareness? Or maybe it’s entertainment and brand awareness. Whatever your objective, the content should match.

3. The technology should be rock-solid. If content is king, technology is queen — the one behind the scenes that makes sure everything keeps running. Your digital signage system should talk effortlessly with your network, integrate seamlessly with your audio and video systems, and be easy to use and update. It should have an installer behind it who can help you out with training and troubleshooting and, if your system does go down, your integrator should offer nearly 24/7 support to get it back up and running for your customers.
